On the Wednesday before Christmas we all gathered to showcase all the work done on our new thematic unit for relevance. All departments worked on one common theme -- WW1 - 1014-2014. It was fantastic to see the pupils talk about their work over the previous two week. Fantastic work in class with all subject areas contributing. A tremendous example of how our teachers work together to create an exciting and relevant experience for our pupils. A huge thank you to everyone and a special thank you to Mrs McBride and our History Department. A very proud moment!

See the Big Questions Below Esags tvIt's great when looking to see good practice and ideas that we do not need to look any further than within our own education community in Northern Ireland. Thematic UnitFirst Staff Development Day of the Year and what a great start! The History Department lead us in devising our new thematic unit based on relevance for learning. As it's 2014 the History department kicked off our first annual theme - WW1... Why must we remember? Fantastic ideas from all departments on how we could work on the theme.
To help give an example / structure to theme we used to online resource Football Remembers: The Christmas Truce. The pack can also be linked to on MySchool Equella. Just search' football and WW1'. This is a great resource that saved us from reinventing the wheel. Working on the new unit together gave us a good chance to revisit our Key Stage 3 Revised Curriculum and to share our ideas and work with colleagues in other departments. So as 'an army marches on its stomach' so also do teachers. A big thank you to Mr D for our Mexican style lunch and giving a great feel good factor to the day. AFL in ActionThank you to all Sperrin IC staff who contributed their thoughts, ideas and good practice in helping us to devise a consistent standardised approach to assessment for learning in the classroom. Read each statement and decide if your practice is - E- embedded U – usually Not practiced AFL in the classroom I connect learning to last lesson and other subjects at the start I ask pupils for success criteria rather than giving it to them – You tell be what makes a grade b? I give thinking / Discussion time – Don’t be too quick to task Questions – I ask OPEN questions – Risk taking I differentiate with each specific group. How do you know exactly what pupils know, I make reference to CIEAG, Literacy, Numeracy, My pupils know targets? ….. How to get there, I mark for improvement. My pupils have opportunity for peer and self-assessment.
