What is Independent learning (IL)
IL is the key skill that promotes effective performance in education, training and employment. It focuses on students’ ability to
- plan and set targets monitor their own progress
- reflect on their own learning and performance
- learn from experience
- become independent learners.
IL is a process of continuous development and improvement. It provides students with a structured approach to learning and self-management and is relevant to every context – from Year 8 through to advanced-level study to higher education, work-based learning and employment.
Employers want trainees and staff who:
- are independent and self-motivated
- can set themselves targets and plan how they will achieve them in a given timescale
- can evaluate and learn from their own performance
- can learn new skills and knowledge and adapt to new situations.
